On Monday, Jesy Nelson announced that she would leave Little Mix. Her statement included the reason we all expected; the constant scrutiny and pressure causing her mental health to continue declining.
Known as ‘The fat one’ and numerous attacks on the shape of her head/face, it is no surprise that Jesy has suffered with mental health issues. This was her introduction to fame, and would be the ultimate demise of her career.
Who is Jesy Nelson?
Jesy is a 29 year-old singer from Romford, Essex. In 2011, Jesy sprang to fame as Little Mix (a manufactured girl-band, by Simon Cowell) won the X-Factor; the first time a group had ever won! Her life got the fame injection in such a short space of time and it has been common knowledge ever since about the impact this has had on her mental health.
The journey has spanned 9 years, with the band releasing 6 albums, and selling over 50 million records worldwide. Jesy has even won a National Television Award (NTA) for her documentary.
Jesy and the Bullies
Since she first appeared as part of Little Mix on X-Factor, the trolls were out in droves to torment this beautiful, young, talented woman. Every inch of her body has come under scrutiny, being constantly compared to the slimmer, more ‘prettier’ girls in the band. Jesy continued to receive constant abuse despite losing weight, toning up, and undergoing minor non-surgical procedures to alter the shape of her face. It seemed Jesy could do nothing to put out the flames of hatred from the weakest, gutless people on this planet – The Trolls.
Odd One Out
This documentary was heart-breaking and eye-opening; it gave viewers a personal insight into Jesy and her mental health. This was the first time that Jesy had spoken out publicly in detail despite her struggles being regularly reported. Hearing how she had almost become her own troll trying to counteract every horrid comment that may come her. Training more than the other girls to make sure she knew all the steps, and toned up. She has been on a mental health path of destruction for 9 years and the torment has caused a clearly visible distorted opinion of her body.
I genuinely felt so sorry for her, to have her dream in one hand, and her nightmare in the other. She admitted that the abuse has been so unbearable that she has made attempts to take her own life. She stated, ‘I didn’t see her as Jesy, I saw her as “the fat one from Little Mix”. Up until now I hated her not because she’d done anything bad but because I was made to hate her by endless amounts of trolling.’
Jesy’s Next Chapter
Jesy has had to give up her passion due to the huge impact trolling has had on her life. When I heard this news I felt sad but also relieved for her. I doubt the haters will stop hating, but I do hope she undergoes some self love therapy to help deal with it better. She has stated that she will be taking much needed time out to re-focus on her and surround her with close loved ones.
I hope that the next chapter is a much happier one for her; nobody deserves to be hated. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, but most of all it comes from within. I wish her all the very best, and I hope she learns to love herself again.
Jesy, you are a beautiful talent. Don’t let your light go out ❤
If you are struggling with bullying, read my blog for some tips.
It is just appalling to think that a young woman’s life is so impacted by all this unnecessary hate. To do this to someone is a very, very sad statement in society and a spotlight on how women in particular (but not exclusively) are picked apart, consumed and discarded. I hope she finds something that boosts her soul — thanks for sharing!

I know, watching the documentary was heartbreaking. I thought then that it wouldn’t be long before she left the band. So sad she’s been driven out by all the hate. 💜

It’s so sad that Jesy had no other choice but leave Little Mix, but I’m so glad that she put her mental health first. Hopefully, she’s inspired so many people to put their mental health first and seek help if needed x

I love Little Mix and their songs, but my sister was the one who knew every news about them. And when I got home she told me this horrible news. I can’t believe people still do this without even realizing the impact of what they do. Now it wouldn’t be the same without her.

I’ve heard about this and it truly is disgusting and unacceptable. It’s society that needs to do better, not Jesay. I only hope she finds inner peace and happiness.

Very true. It’s a shame so many like her are driven out of their jobs and some to suicide because of the horrible, negative people out there. 💜
