Trevor Speaks to Life of A Crazy Mum
We caught up with Trevor Payne to chat about the show’s continued success. How they keep things fresh after nearly four decades, and what fans can expect from this year’s tour. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newbie, this interview offers an insight to one of the UK’s most beloved rock ‘n’ roll shows.
That’ll Be The Day was created in 1986, tell me more about why you wanted to create this show…
There was an opportunity to bring something new to the marketplace. That was a variety show based on rock and pop music.
The show is approaching it’s 40th anniversary. What do you think has made it such a successful show that keeps audiences wanting more….
The quality, the variety and the dedication of the company to produce a complete night of pop entertainment that changes annually and keeps us and the audience fresh.
Can TBTD last to another milestone anniversary, maybe its 50th?
Who knows? Maybe! Its popularity now is as strong as it’s ever been.
TBTD has been a worldwide hit show, do you have some favourite places/venues you’ve visited over the years? Tell me more….
Our favourite venue would have to be London Palladium which we have played 5 times. We have toured in Europe which was successful. We had the pleasure to go to Malta recently, which is where I first appeared in the 80s and wrote the Maltese Calypso. It became a big hit not only with the Maltese, but with the visiting tourists. It is still played there today.
You’ve had a long partnership with Gary Anderson with TBTD. What’s the secret to maintaining such a long and successful working relationship?
To give and take on both sides. In a comedy partnership, the most essential ingredient is a telepathic understanding which we have developed over the years.
Life on the road can be difficult when you’re away from loved ones and routine. How to you keep your mind/mental health healthy? Do you have a top tip to share?
On tour, the most important thing each day is the show as it leads up to the evening’s performance. We spend lots of time tinkering with the content and constructing the next production which keeps us sane. My top tip would be to only worry about the things you can affect. If you can’t affect it, don’t worry about it.
For any young people out there wanting a career in show business, what advice can you offer?
The difficulty now about getting into show business is everything has changed since TBTD started. The best route these days seems to be either going into an organised entertainment centre. The likes of Warner’s, Pontins, or Cruise Liners seems to give people a kick start in their careers.
