Zazie Beetz returns with new faces like Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener, promising to deliver another dark, gripping chapter in the Joker saga. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures in collaboration with Joint Effort, this film is set to captivate audiences once again. This is an honest, NO SPOILERS review of the Joker: Folie à Deux.

Plot

Two years after committing a series of murders, Arthur Fleck ‘Joker’ is held at Arkham State Hospital, awaiting trial. His legal defence hinges on the claim that his alter ego, “Joker,” is responsible for the horrific acts. His legal team claim it is part of his dissociative identity disorder. During a music therapy session, Arthur crosses paths with fellow patient. She opens up about her troubled past and abusive upbringing. Sharing a similar background, Arthur is captivated by her actions and persona. This sparks a connection between the two that adds a new layer of intrigue to the story.

Music

Don’t let the fact that Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical deter you. This film masterfully weaves music into its narrative. From soft, haunting whistling to breath-taking musical numbers, the soundtrack is nothing short of stunning. The diverse range of musical choices elevates the emotional depth, transitioning from joyful and upbeat to sombre and introspective. This immersive soundscape guides you on a profound journey. Allowing you to truly empathise with the characters as they navigate their pain, suffering, joy, and delusion. Get ready to experience a film that resonates on every level!

Phoenix and Gaga aka Joker and Harlequin

If there’s ever been a Hollywood power couple, it’s this one! Phoenix’s and Gaga’s performances intertwine beautifully, creating a captivating dynamic that feels real, intense, and at times, unsettling. The portrayal of their relationship is both abusive and sincere, blending raw emotion with complexity. While the Joker’s motives appear rooted in a pure desire for love and stability. One can’t help but question Harlequin’s intentions. Their individual journeys are compelling, yet they weave together to form a rich tapestry of conflicting emotions. This makes their connection both mesmerizing and thought-provoking. A powerful duo who leaves audiences eager to unravel their intricate bond.

Cinematography

Joker: Folie à Deux is a visually stunning film, masterfully crafted with distinct segments that showcase various cinematographic styles. The opening scenes cleverly recap of The Murray’s Show through a whimsical Looney Tunes cartoon aesthetic, setting an intriguing tone. The overall colour palette leans toward drab, reflecting the bleakness of Gotham. Yet it strategically incorporates vibrant pops of colour to tantalize the visual senses. The film’s cut scenes, particularly during the grand musical numbers, burst forth with dazzling showbiz flair, presenting polished, larger-than-life performances. These sequences often manifest as dreamlike or imaginary moments, immersing viewers in the characters’ psyches. The juxtaposition of subdued tones and vibrant spectacles not only enhances the storytelling but also reinforces the emotional depth of the characters’ journeys. This makes the cinematography a crucial element in bringing this dark and complex narrative to life. The artistic vision leaves a lasting impact, elevating the film’s overall experience.

The Review

After eagerly anticipating Joker: Folie à Deux, I expected a glowing review, especially given its promising elements. However, the overall plot fell short of my expectations. This film had the potential to be outstanding, yet it veered off course and felt more like courtroom drama. While Lady Gaga delivers an impressive performance as Harlequin, I found myself disappointed by the character’s portrayal. There are significant differences between the Harlequin we know and this interpretation, which left me wanting more depth. To top it all off, after two hours of build-up, the ending was unexpected yet ultimately unsatisfying.

That said, the film does feature some outstanding moments. The graphic prison scenes starkly remind us of Gotham’s pervasive corruption and violence, creating a chilling atmosphere. The scene where the Joker addresses the jury is an emotional highlight, definitely a tear-jerker! Similarly, the moment he discovers Harlequin’s true intentions packs a punch, evoking strong feelings.

I genuinely enjoyed the musical sequences, although a few moments felt a bit cringe-worthy. Despite this, the soundtrack is nothing short of fabulous, and I suspect it will garner awards attention. Overall, while Joker: Folie à Deux has its strengths—powerful performances and striking visuals—it ultimately left me feeling underwhelmed. This film has all the makings of a smash hit, but the execution of the plot and character development didn’t quite hit the mark. As a huge fan of the franchise, I hoped for more.
